Cleaning your coffee maker is important and extremely easy. You should be cleaning your drip filter coffee maker every month to remove scale, coffee oils, and other impurities that will affect the quality of your brew.

I prefer to use white vinegar to clean my coffee pot. You can also purchase coffee machine cleaners, which make the process easier and faster, but it will cost more money.

  1. Mix 1 part of vinegar to 2 parts of water (enough to fill the pot).
  2. Put filter paper in the coffee maker.
  3. Add the water/vinegar mix to the water reservoir.
  4. Turn on the coffee maker and let the cycle run.
  5. Remove the filter and rinse the coffee pot.
  6. Repeat the steps above 2 times using only water.

Warning: Make sure to carefully cool off the coffee pot. Adding cold water to a hot coffee pot can cause the glass to shatter.

What About Coffee Maker Cleaning Products?

You do have the option of purchasing a commercial cleaning product, but white vinegar works equally well. Save yourself some extra money and use the vinegar method outlined above.

If your coffee maker is really dirty or hasn’t been cleaned in a while, I recommend running two water/vinegar mixtures through and then rinsing it 2-3 times.
